Identity & Perception

I like to see/read/watch ads. But I enjoy understanding ads even more.

Recently I am puzzled by the series of ads of a real estate. In the ad there is a glamorous lady in different elegant costume. You can't miss if you are in Hong Kong these days. While I enjoy watching the beautiful lady in the ad, I am totally befuddled by the concept behind. Well, the "model" is as expected, beautiful, and, probably glamours. But after all, what is the deal between a real estate and a pretty model leading a stylish life? The conventional selling point of real estate is to co-relate happy family and the real estate.

I don't get it, not until I see the fine prints. "Oh! She is MISS UNIVERSE! " After the stunning discovery, surprisingly she becomes more than just a model. She's all that! Chiseled, luscious, sexy and attractive.

I won't be shocked to learn that if the model is Miss Hong Kong because the stature of Miss Hong Kong has long been denigrated. But my perception is definitely skewed by the identity "Miss Universe." Miss Universe is still some kind of quality assurance even though that might not be the case. After all I am demarcated by psychology.

Without identity, we are plain and bland. With identity, we could be easily misunderstood.

  • My eyes were also caught by that same real estate ad when it was first out....right, you just can't miss it....
I had the same query on my mind - "what does this pretty lady has to do with real estate?!", after knowing that she's Miss Universe had puzzled me even more.

However, that is the essence of nowadays' ads - they make you to use your brain (well...so we don't get Alzeimer too early =P)
